It's mid-October and the forecast says 93 on Friday. There's a Heat Advisory from Thursday morning through Saturday at 8 p.m. It cools off a bit by Sunday, which tops out around 87. So this weekend works best early or late: kids' Halloween stuff in the afternoon, a night market once the sun goes down, and a Sunday that finally feels like fall.
📅 This weekend
FRIDAY
Santa Margarita (7–0) is at St. John Bosco, 7 p.m. in Bellflower. It's the Trinity League game of the year, and it's worth the drive if you have a reason to go (tickets).
SATURDAY
Walk Against Drugs, 8 a.m.–noon. This is the 38th year. It starts with a rally at Mission Viejo High, walks up La Paz and along the Oso Creek Trail, and finishes at the Village Green by the Murray Center. The finish has a free community fair and disaster-preparedness expo with inflatables, face painting and food trucks. Heads up for drivers: expect lane closures at La Paz & Marguerite from 6:30 a.m.
Mission Viejo Farmers Market, 9–1 at the North Paseo, 25282 Marguerite. There's no RSM market this week (it runs 2nd & 4th Saturdays only), so this is the one.
Harvest Festival, noon–3 at Founders Park, Ladera Ranch. There's a costume contest (sign up at the booth by 1:45, judging at 2:15), a Kids Market run by young entrepreneurs, a Halloween show at 1:15, food trucks, and a Ten Mile Brewing beer garden. Know before you go: it's cashless, and kids need an activity wristband for the rides and games. The $10 resident pre-sale has closed, so wristbands are $20 at the booth, or $1 per individual ticket. Leave the dog at home.
Library Trick-or-Treat, 2–4 at the Mission Viejo Library. Kids go station to station for treats and activities. Costumes encouraged, bags too. Free.
Día de los Muertos Night Market, 5–9 p.m. at the North Paseo. It's free and runs after dark, so it's the cool part of the day. There's live music from Radio Riot, Ballet Folklórico, 50+ vendors, food trucks, and beer from TapTruck OC.
SUNDAY
Ladera Ranch Farmers Market, 9–1 at Daisy & Avendale. Open to everyone.
Heritage House Open House, 11–1 in Melinda Park, 28951 Melinda Rd. It's Mission Viejo's original home-sales office, now a small free museum of how the town got built.
Repair Café OC, 1–5 in the Sycamore A room at the Murray Center. Bring the wobbly lamp, the bike that clicks or the jeans with the hole, and volunteer fixers will help you repair it. It's walk-in and free.
🍴 Open & shut
OPEN: Sourdough & Co., RSM. The sourdough sandwich-and-soup chain is now at 22312 El Paseo, Suite E. That's Plaza El Paseo, the same center as Redshift and The Goldfinch, which is turning into RSM's best lunch block. The Chamber holds its ribbon cutting Thursday at 4. Ladera already has one on Antonio.
COMING: Creekside Restaurant & Bar, Rancho Mission Viejo. An American restaurant and bar (cioppino, ribs, tuna tartare) is headed for 30865 Gateway Place. All we know so far is "fall 2026," with no date yet.
Still waiting: Wholesome Choice on Marguerite and Pasta Viva on Santa Margarita Pkwy. Neither has a confirmed opening day yet. We'll tell you the week they do.
💬 Around town: Your Halloween cheat sheet
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which means two weekends of stuff on the way there. Here's what's public across the three towns so far:
Sat Oct 17 (this weekend): Ladera Harvest Festival, MV Library Trick-or-Treat, and the Día de los Muertos Night Market. All are above.
Sat Oct 24: Mission Viejo's Día de los Muertos Festival, 2–7 at the Murray Center. It has a live butterfly exhibit (new this year), a procession at dusk, and lit-up classic-car ofrendas. Bring a photo of someone you miss for the community altar. Free and open to everyone.
Sat Oct 24, after dark: San Francisco Solano Catholic Church in RSM holds its first-ever Trunk or Treat, 6–8:30 p.m. at 22082 Antonio Pkwy. Expect decorated cars, costumes and candy, and you can sign up to host a trunk. Free and open to everyone.
Sun Oct 25: Tales, Tails & Treats, 11–noon at MV Animal Services. A Halloween storytime, crafts, and adoptable kittens. Free, no registration.
Fri Oct 30: SAMLARC's Halloween Family Festival at RSM Central Park. Activities run 3:30–6, including a petting zoo, a climbing wall, pumpkin decorating and trick-or-treating, then The Nightmare Before Christmas on the big screen at 6:30. Free.
Ladera teens, grades 6–12: the Teen Movie Night & Haunted Maze is Sat Oct 24, but it's residents only (you register with a LaderaLife login) and it sells out every year. Sign up early.

💎 One good thing: Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary
Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary, 29322 Modjeska Canyon Rd. It's up Santiago Canyon Rd, past Cook's Corner.
What it is: 12 shady acres at the end of Modjeska Canyon, with a small natural-history museum, short trails, and a bird-watching deck.
When: open to the public Saturday and Sunday, 10–3. It's free (donations welcome) and you don't need a reservation.
Know before you go: parking is small and first-come, so get there early. No dogs. It closes on Red Flag fire-weather days, so check before you drive up.
Why this weekend: it's a canyon full of oaks. On a 90-degree Saturday morning, it's one of the few outdoor places nearby that stays shady.
Your turn: who does Halloween best on your street? Reply with the block (no house numbers needed) and we'll put together a three-town drive-by list before the 31st.
