Quick apology: OSO usually lands with your Friday coffee, and today it's landing with your afternoon one. Entirely our fault. The good news is that nothing below has happened yet — Ladera's block party doesn't start until 5:30 tonight, and the biggest free night of the summer is tomorrow.

Eleven days until the first bell rings, which makes this the last properly unhurried weekend of the summer. Conveniently, all three towns are putting something out on the grass.

Ladera Ranch — National Night Out + Summer Concert: Undercover
Founders Park, 28275 Avendale Blvd. Safety fair with the sheriff and fire crews 5:30–7:30, band 6:30–8:30. Free and open to everyone. Six food trucks on site — Jay's Hot Chicken, Rolling Sushi, Savory Times, The Deli Doctor, Cathy's Cookies, Frankies Frozen Treats. Bring a blanket or low chair, but no vinyl-backed tarps. Leave the dog home; service animals only.

This is Ladera's last summer concert of the year — the Town Green calendar is clear after tonight.

Mission Viejo — Symphony in the Cities & Prelude in the Park
Oso Viejo Community Park, 24932 Veterans Way. Free, 4–8:30 p.m., with Pacific Symphony's downbeat at 7.

The three hours before the orchestra are the real event this year: freestyle motocross (two-time X Games medalist Javier Villegas and Derek Beckering, three shows), a mechanical bull, a dunk tank, a pie-eating contest, a goat petting zoo, bounce houses, face painting and the kids' Musical Playground, with the Vintage Vinyl band playing through it. Six food trucks — Pizzini, Prime Philly, Sabrosa, Scooter's Italian Ice, Tropical Sno, Xclusive Taqueria — plus a Rotary beer garden.

Two things worth knowing: you can put blankets and chairs down starting at 1 p.m., and the city's ABLE program is running specially marked booths with adaptive activities and a treasure hunt for kids and adults with disabilities (questions: [email protected]). Come early, park once, stay all night.

Mission Viejo Farmers Market & Crafts — 9 a.m.–1 p.m., 25282 Marguerite Pkwy.

Lake Mission Viejo — The Fabulous Thunderbirds, 7 p.m.
Same night, other side of town. The Lake is a private association — its events are for members and their invited guests only. There's no public ticket and no gate sale; you'd need a member to bring you in. If that's not you, the symphony is free and ten minutes away.

Ladera Ranch Farmers Market — 9 a.m.–1 p.m., Daisy St. & Avendale Blvd.

Mission Viejo Library — NASA's Roman Space Telescope, 2–3:30 p.m., City Council Chamber. A NASA Solar System Ambassador on the observatory that's due to launch on a Falcon Heavy Aug. 30 — three weeks out. All ages, free, no ticket, no registration. Just walk in.

Rancho Santa Margarita — 90s Rockshow at Central Park, 30842 La Miranda, 6–8 p.m. Free and open to the public, food trucks and a beer-and-wine garden.

Saturday, Aug. 15 — Pet-a-Palooza Night Market, 5–9 p.m., North Paseo at Los Osos (25282 Marguerite). Bring the dog — there's a cooling station, live music, food trucks, games and crafts, and Mission Viejo Animal Services bringing adoptable animals.

Sunday, Aug. 16 — RSM closes its season at Central Park with a double bill: Typical Gypsys 4–5:30, Diego's Garage 6–8, plus the RSM Care art exhibit and the Dreamers Market. Free. That's the last outdoor concert any of the three towns has on the books.

Same afternoon in Mission Viejo: Repair Café OC at the Norman P. Murray Center, 1–5 p.m. Bring the wobbly bike, the dead lamp, the jeans with a hole. Volunteers fix it for free, no appointment.

Mark your calendar, because the two districts don't line up. Capistrano Unified — RSM, Ladera and Rancho Mission Viejo — goes back Tuesday, Aug. 18. Saddleback Valley, which covers Mission Viejo, goes back Thursday, Aug. 20.

So if your street straddles the district line, your neighbors get two extra mornings of summer. Either way: two more weekends of nobody having homework. Spend them accordingly.

The city pools. Family rec swim runs every day at both Montanoso (25800 Montanoso Dr.) and Sierra (26887 Recodo Ln.) — noon to 7:45 weekdays, noon to 6:45 Saturday, noon to 4:45 Sunday. Drop-in day passes are sold at the door; no membership, no HOA card, no lagoon key.

The water slide is the part people don't know about: Saturdays only, noon–4, and it runs through Labor Day weekend. So tomorrow goes slide at noon, symphony at seven. (Anyone under 18 dropping in needs a parent or guardian to sign them in.)
